Getting to Yosemite National Park

With its amazing granite cliffs, clear waters and abundant wildlife, Yosemite National Park in east-central California is one of the most beloved places in the world. The park covers approximately 1,200 square miles of spectacular territory, and it attracts millions of visitors every year. People come from all over the world to see the features of the park, but the trip is not always easy. Like most National Parks, Yosemite is located in a fairly remote part of the country. However, traveling to the park is quite easy of you follow good directions.

If you are planning to fly into the area to visit Yosemite National Park, there are three major airports that are located 4 to 5 hours away by car. These airports are located in the San Francisco Bay area, which is a major travel destination. Otherwise, there are airports located north and east of the park in Reno, Nevada, Sacramento, California and Mammoth Lakes, California. These airports are somewhat closer, but many people find that they are not as convenient as the airports in the Bay area.

Driving to the park is simple for most travelers. From the Bay area, it is recommended that travelers take I-580 to the east, then join I-205 heading east toward Highway 120 going east, or Highway 140 headed east. This leads directly into the park. From Sacramento, it is advised that travelers follow Highway 99 south to either Highway 120 or 140 going east into the park.

From the Reno and Lake Tahoe region, travelers should follow US 395 south to Lee Vining. Here, they can take Highway 120 to the west into Yosemite. This route is open from late May or early June through October, although availability depends on conditions. Otherwise, travelers can take I-80 west into Sacramento, then follow Highway 99 south to Highways 120 or 140. These roads lead into Yosemite National Park. Travelers coming from the south should take I-5 north to Highway 99 north. Then, they should follow Highway 41 north into the park.

Although it takes some time and effort to reach Yosemite, the trip is worth the work. Yosemite National Park is a gorgeous place that must be seen to be believed. It might not be the easiest place to reach, but those who make the trip have no regrets.
