Getting to Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is one of the crown jewels of America's national park system and a popular vacation destination. The park is known for its extraordinary geothermal pools, mountain ranges, canyons, lakes, rivers and diverse wildlife. Yellowstone National Park has a number of entrances that can be reached by several different airports and roads. The area was designated a national park in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Park Location
The park area encompasses 3400 square miles of land that lies mostly in the state of Montana, but also extends into Wyoming and Idaho. The park is in what is considered a somewhat remote location, with a major airport that serves the most flights from around the country a six-hour drive away. Some small, municipal airports are closer, but flights may be much more expensive.

North Entrance
The North Entrance is the only entrance that is reliably open all year long because of weather and road conditions. The closest airport is in Bozeman, Montana. Bozeman's airport, Gallatin Field, is 56 miles from the park entrance at Gardiner, Montana.

Northeast Entrance
The Northeast Entrance is located near Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. Road closures near Cooke City make this entrance less reliable than the North Entrance. The nearest airport for the Northeast Entrance is in Billings, Montana.

East and South Entrance
The East and South Entrances to the park have limited park services are reliably open to wheeled vehicles from mid-May to early November. The closest airport to the East Entrance is Cody, Wyoming. The closest airport to the South Entrance is in Jackson, Wyoming.

West Entrance
The closest airports to the West Entrance of the park are smaller airports at Idaho Falls, Idaho, Bozeman, Montana, and West Yellowstone. Salt Lake City is the only large airport in the area.

Driving To Yellowstone
A number of car rental companies are available at the large and small airports that service Yellowstone National Park. Bus service is also available to the park, but not all cities offer year-round service.
