Getting to Muir Woods National Park Monument

Located approximately 11 miles north of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods National Monument was the first national park created in an urban area. Named for naturalist John Muir, the park preserves old growth redwood forests located along the coast of California. The narrow, winding roads leading to the park frequently become congested. Limited parking presents another challenge for visitors. On summer weekends, Marin Transit operates Muir Woods Shuttle Route 66 to reduce traffic congestion.

From San Francisco or the South Bay Area, travel on Highway 101 North and cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Exit at Highway 1/Stinson Beach. Drive one-half mile to the stoplight and turn left. Proceed 2.7 miles to the top of the hill and make a right turn to Muir Woods/Mount Tamalpais. At the 4-way stop, make a left turn toward Muir Woods. Travel down the hill, approximately 1.6 miles. The parking lot for Muir Woods is located at the bottom of the hill, on the right.

To reach Muir Woods National Monument from Berkeley, Oakland or the East Bay, take Interstate 80 East. Exit onto Interstate 580 West at the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge exit. Turn onto Highway 101 South. Take the Highway 1/Stinson Beach exit. After one-half mile, turn left at the stoplight. Travel 2.7 miles to the top of the hill and go right toward Muir Woods/Mount Tamalpais. After slightly less than a mile, make a left at the 4-way stop. The parking lot for the park is located at the bottom of the hill, after another 1.6 miles.

Muir Woods is also located near the North Bay and cities of San Rafael and Santa Rosa. Begin driving on Highway 101 South, then take the Highway 1/Stinson Beach exit. Turn left at the stop light after about half a mile. Follow the road for approximately 2.7 miles to the top of the hill. Make a right to continue to Muir Woods/Mount Tamalpais. After approximately .8 miles, make a left. Proceed about 1.6 miles downhill to the parking lot, which will be located on the right.
