Getting to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must-see for anyone traveling to Hawaii. This park shows you the Kilauea and Mauna Loa. These two volcanoes are the most active in the entire world. You can learn about the history of volcanoes and how they have shaped the islands of Hawaii. Additionally, you will learn about the unique aspects of volcanoes and how they contribute to the ecosystem and the earth in general.

To get to the park from Hilo, you must travel thirty miles southwest on Highway 11. The drive from Hilo should take approximately 45 minutes.

From Kailua-Kona, take Highway 11 southeast for 96 miles, a drive of about two or two and a half hours.

If you are staying even farther away, in Waimea, you can take Highways 19 and 11 for 125 miles through both Waimea and Hilo. This drive will be around two and a half to three hours.

You will have to arrange transportation to get to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Rental cars are available at both the Hilo and Kona airports. There are also public and commercial tour buses during certain times.

There are no rental vehicles available at the park, so make sure your transportation allows you to get back to where you are staying.

While viewing these volcanoes and learning about them is a beautiful and enlightening experience, it can also be dangerous. Make sure to follow every posted sign you see and to listen to the park rangers. Bring plenty of water to drink and wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Do not go off any of the hiking trails, and never hike in the dark.

Ask the rangers about the volcanic fumes. The elderly, persons with lung diseases, small children and pregnant women should not breathe in certain fumes at this park. Make sure you are aware of the spots in the park that are more dangerous and avoid them.
