Getting to Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park, located just south of Yellowstone in Wyoming's northwest corner, is easy to reach by car from Denver, Salt Lake City and the Pacific Northwest.

From Denver, take I-25 north into Wyoming and Cheyenne. At Cheyenne, turn west onto Interstate 80 across the state to U.S. 191, at Rock Springs. Drive north on 191 to the hamlet of Pinedale, then veer northeast on the same road to Jackson and into the park. An exceptionally scenic drive, U.S. 191 takes visitors across the Green River, past the Gros Ventre Wilderness and through storied Jackson Hole.

From Salt Lake City, take U.S. 89 north. Your route will skirt the Utah-Wyoming border and pass bucolic dairy farms before arriving in Alpine, on the Wyoming side just south of Jackson and park headquarters. This may not be the fastest route, but it is far more attractive than taking I-15 all the way up to Idaho Falls and then zipping northeast on U.S. 20 into Wyoming. The latter route makes sense, however, if your plans include Yellowstone National Park in addition to Grand Teton, as U.S. 20 crosses Targhee Pass and leads straight into the larger park.

An alternative from Salt Lake City would be I-15 to Idaho Falls, then U.S. 26 southeast to Swan Valley on the edge of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. From here, take Idaho 31 north to Victor, then hook up with Wyoming 22 across Teton Pass into Jackson. Drivers who'd prefer not to take on Teton Pass and its 20% downhill grade can opt to stay on U.S. 26, which follows the Snake River to Alpine and then curves north to Jackson.

Travelers bound for Grand Teton National Park from the Pacific Northwest should take I-90 across Washington and Idaho into Montana, to U.S. 287 which snakes south between the towns of Whitehall and Three Forks, east of Butte. This route leads into Yellowstone and south to Grand Teton. If you prefer the interstates, however, take I-15 south from the 90 before Butte, and proceed to Idaho Falls and either route mentioned above.
