About the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park was established in 1940. It is situated on the borders of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park covers over 20,000 acres.

A natural break in the Appalachian Mountains forms the Cumberland Gap. This gap was used by Native Americans for hunting in the early days. Many different animals passed through the gap and it was a fertile hunting grounds. Beginning in 1775 American settlers used the Cumberland Gap on their travels west into Kentucky.

In the early 1900s, a family by the name of Hensley moved to Cumberland Cap. Family members and others moved there and formed a community, including a church and school. The Hensley Settlement has been preserved and is part of today's Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Tours are available of the Settlement. Special events such as living history events, lifestyle demonstrations and campfire programs are offered at the park. Concerts and music festivals are also held at Cumberland Gap.
