About the Canyon De Chelly National Monument

One of the most beautiful hidden destinations in the Southwestern United States is the Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Apache, Arizona. For more than 5,000 years the Chelly canyon has provided fertile farmlands and a well-protected home for local inhabitants amid rather unforgiving terrain. The steep walls of the canyon offer shelter from the elements and invaders while a local river source provides water, a primary component for life in this rugged terrain.

The Chelly Canyon has been the home for several different tribes of Amerindians. The ancient Puebloans first settled this area thousands of years ago. Their descendants, the Hopi, further developed this area into a fertile farmland raising a variety of crops. Peach orchards were planted alongside rows and rows of corn and other crops. Natural springs found in the canyon provided plenty of water for irrigation and for sustaining life among the Hopi.
